FLAT ROCK, TOLEDO APRIL 25 DOUBLE-HEADER KICKS OFF 2009 SEASON TOLEDO, OH: (4-10-09): Race fans will have the opportunity to catch 2 events in one day Saturday, April 25 as Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways open their doors for the 2009 racing season. Toledo's 50th Anniversary begins with the ASA North Late Models and USA Modifieds in an afternoon event, while Flat Rock jumps into action with their traditional Saturday night show at 7 p.m. With the 2 tracks just 30 miles apart, fans can attend the Toledo event in the afternoon and then make their way north up I-75 to Flat Rock and should be able to make the start of the 7 p.m. event at "The Rock". For the third consecutive season, the ASA group is leasing Toledo Speedway to begin their season in this part of the country. The ASA North Late Models and the USA Modifieds will team up to open the 2009 campaign at the fast ½ mile paved oval. The crate-engine, template-bodied ASA cars will compete in a 125 lap feature, with preliminary events and a 50 lap main event set for the USA Modified group. Friday, April 24 will see practice from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Action starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 25 with practice. Time trials are set for Noon, with racing at 2:30 p.m. An on-track autograph session is planned prior to the feature events. All tickets will go on sale at Noon Saturday when the front gates open. Flat Rock Speedway is preparing for its 56th season of racing on the same day, Saturday, April 25. The ARCA Moran Chevrolet-Miller Lite Late Models, Figure 8's and Street Stocks will open the new season as they have since 1977. The quick ¼ mile paved oval will have 7-Up as the opening night sponsor. The pit gates will open at 1:30, practice will begin at 3, time trials at 5 and racing at 7 p.m. Toledo's weekly Friday night race cards, featuring the Miller Lite Summer Racing Series, begins May 1. The ARCA Sportsman, Figure 8's, 4 Cylinders and Speedway Tire/Auto Factory Stocks will be in action for the initial Friday night show. Gates open at 5 and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. The Buckeye Cable Sports System (BCSN) and the Toledo area Tim Hortons will serve as sponsors for the May 1 event. Fans can go to participating Tim Hortons for a money-saving admission coupon for the first Friday night race.

The action was exciting at Highland Rim Saturday night 4-11-09. In the photo above two cars tangle up. Bowling Green, KY. Sportsman driver #9 Jason Floyd was leading the sportsman race with just a hand full of laps to go when the #45 hits Floyd in the rear and spins him out. The #17 Late Model lead several laps and then he gets hit and spun by #22 Barrett. The last race of the night I believe it was called the Taxi Cab class was wild and crazy.

POSTED 4-10-09 CHECKERS THE CLOWN AT THE RACE TRACK!

For you that don't know. This is "Checkers the Clown". He passes out candy to children and also adults at Highland Rim Speedway. First let me start by saying, I have written many articles about racers, promoters, tracks and etc. but sometimes we forget about people that help make racing a fun place to be. As most of you already know I am from Bowling Green, KY. but have visited Highland Rim hundreds if not thousands of time in my life. Most of the time I sat in the section at turns three and four. For years Checkers the Clown would come up to that section with a bag of stuffed teddy bears and other animals and toss them to the young children and sometimes older KIDS! Then he gets the candy out, my favorite part, especially the tootsie roll pops. With the economy being bad, people laid off work and the newspapers and TV's full of bad news it's comforting to see the smile on Checkers face and the smiles he leaves behind on others. I for one would like to feature "Checkers the Clown" on this site and say a very special thanks for brighten up the little kids life's (Big ones too!) Keep up the good work and may God bless you. (April 6, 2009) – Kevin Harvick will be atop of the flagstand at the start of the ARCA RE/MAX Series Carolina 200 race at the Rockingham Speedway on April 19th and will wave the green flag to begin the highly anticipated race. Harvick’s part time Nationwide Series driver, Tony Stewart had the honor during last season’s ARCA race at the historic track. Harvick will be making the trip to Rockingham following the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway where he will be driving the No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet on Saturday night. If weather is a factor in Phoenix, Harvick will not be able to make the trip to Rockingham. Kevin Harvick Incorporated will also field a car in the Carolina 200 with Ricky Carmichael getting his first laps at the one-mile speedway. “Throwing the green flag at Rockingham will definitely be a new experience for me,” said the 2007 Daytona 500 winner. “In all my years of racing, I’ve never been asked to be the honorary starter. I’m also looking forward to the ARCA race. It will be Ricky’s (Carmichael) first time at Rockingham so he should be exciting to watch.” Rockingham Speedway President, Andy Hillenburg was all smiles after hearing about the Carolina 200’s honorary starter. “Here at Rockingham, it’s all about our fans and racing, and to have a driver that has won races in the sports biggest three series this year, backs that up,” said Hillenburg. “We are very honored that Kevin accepted and with him making an all night trip to get back from Phoenix really shows how much he cares about the fans.” Carolina 200 race weekend kicks off on Friday April 17th with Thunderfest in downtown Rockingham from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. There will be a hauler parade through downtown Rockingham at noon on Friday for the day-long celebration as well as most of the drivers signing autographs at 6:00 p.m. On track activities begin Friday as well with UARA practice and qualifying. Saturday April 18th will feature the UARA race and practice and qualifying for the ARCA cars. The Carolina 200 is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday April 19th. Fairgrounds Speedway Media/Fan Appreciation Day a Success Written by: Rob Spires The economy may be slumping, but there was no sign of that at Fairgrounds Speedway on Saturday. A strong number of teams representing each of Fairgrounds Speedway's ten divisions of racing were on hand to show off new equipment at the track's first Open House and Media Day. Among the drivers who had race cars on display was last year's third-place finisher in Supertruck points, nineteen year-old Daniel Bolden. Bolden's #09 truck was sporting a flashy new paint job. "We hung a new body on it over the winter," Bolden commented. Bolden wasn't the only driver with a different look. Returning track champion Andy Johnson and Trista Stevenson (who missed playing a game in her high school softball tournament to be at the track) were also sporting new paint on their Late Models. However, don't be fooled by the paint scheme on Johnson's car, it's the same car and motor that propelled him to last year's championship, assured Johnson. Of course, the economy wasn't the only concern for racers over the off-season. Former track promoter Joe Mattioli wasn't granted a lease extension for the Speedway, putting in the hands of the Metro Fair Board to name a new promoter. Eventually, co-owner of Full Throttle Race Parts Danny Denson was granted the lease at the end of January. Not wanting to begin preparing for the season until a new promoter was confirmed put many racers in a bind to prepare for opening night. "We didn't start (preparing) until January," said Supertruck driver Jess Williams, "but we have two trucks together now." Johnson took a different approach. "We went on with plans (after last season). We figured there would be racing here," he said. Though there hasn't been racing at Fairgrounds Speedway since September, it doesn't mean that the drivers haven't been busy. Bolden and Williams competed in the United States Supertruck Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park in November, a race that Bolden ended up winning. "We were down on power, but we handled better," Bolden said. Many of the competitors in that race were using heavier NASCAR Camping World Truck Series style chassis. Williams said he believed that many of the USST's regular competitors would switch to Fairgrounds Speedway's style trucks because of their better handling characteristics. Last year's Sportsman champion Lee Goddard said he is looking forward to the upcoming season. "Danny (Denson) runs a business; he knows what he's doing. He'll make it fair for everybody. I love it- it's a big improvement," he said. While racing will indeed go on, the economic downturn and sponsorship woes are concerning drivers. Both Williams and Stevenson travel to Fairgrounds Speedway from out of state; Mississippi and Illinois respectively. "We drive up here and back every Saturday," Williams said. "We don't have money for hotel rooms." Williams, who won a race last season, added that it's especially difficult for out-of-state drivers to find sponsorship because of their location. "We don't know them and they don't know us," he said. Both Williams and Stevenson are seeking local sponsors to enable them to run the entire season. Fairgrounds Speedway will open its season on Saturday, April 18 with competition in nine divisions. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for children from 11-17, and children under 10 are admitted free. This photo is of the opening night at the Sportsdome, Jeffersonville, IN. They had a huge turnout of race cars according to my source. Hey Odell, It's "Lil Scoop" again...lol. I just wanted to pass some racing info along to you. I thought it would be good for the site. There were a lot of tracks in the area that held their opening night last night and The Sportsdrome (Jeffersonville, IN) was one of them. Doodle and I didn't get to go and after seeing this, I'm mad! It looks like they had a great turn out. I was reading on another site and ran across this bit of info and picture. I sure wish BBR had this type of turn out. With this many cars, there had to be some good racing going on. This sure lit a fire under Doodle to get busy on his car so we can go racing with them.:) Hope to see yall at the races soon. Take care and keep taking those great pics! ...They had 22 cars on hand for the Xtreme 8 with 19 starting the feature. The Dromer 8 had 32 cars in the pits with 25 taking the green. In the other divisions, the Oval Xtreme had 30 cars total, the Dromer Oval had 45, and the FWD had their highest total ever at 27... Angie Dickens

(April 2, 2009) – Last season, Rockingham Speedway honored three of NASCAR’s greats and made them a permanent part of the historic track. The Benny Parsons Tower, the Papa Joe Hendrick Garage Area and the Ricky Rudd Grandstands were all named for three men instrumental to the speedway’s legacy. This year Chris Economaki and Ken Schrader will be honored by the speedway with the naming of the Media Center and Turn Four grandstands, respectively. The Chris Economaki Media Center is dedicated to the man who has covered the sport of auto racing for more than 70 years as a journalist, track announcer, radio and television announcer and has been the editor for National Speed Sport News since 1950. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1994 and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1993. “When you get old, people give you things and I have become humbled by the number of things people have given me in recent years,” said Economaki. “Having spent the majority of my lifetime at race tracks, I’m proud to have my name associated with a race track as rich in history as Rockingham Speedway.” “I first met Chris at a sprint car race when I was a seventeen year old driver,” said Rockingham Speedway President, Andy Hillenburg. “The sport and media coverage we have today would not be the same without the foundation he helped build and I want fans to know it.” Ken Schrader is no stranger to Rockingham Speedway - he earned six top-fives at the track including a second place finish in 1991 during his Cup career at the track. He also had 10 top-10’s at the historic track as well as one pole in 1990. “Ken Schrader is the definition of the term ‘racer.’ He has been and always will be a fan favorite and a personal favorite as well,” said Hillenburg. “The first time I raced at Daytona was in his car as well as my first win there. We share the same passion for the sport and we are very proud to have his name permanently displayed at the Rockingham Speedway.” Schrader just missed winning last year’s ARCA race when he finished second in the first race since the track was reopened.
