Ken-Ten Comes to Music City USA
The Ken-Ten Series was started out of necessity due to high fuel prices and local low car counts.
Craig Thompson of Renegade Race Cars has been trying for several years to get all the local tracks on the same weights and tires. Craig spent the fall season getting over 60 drivers input and sharing information. In November 2008 he sat down with the promoters of Beech Bend, Highland Rim, Corbin and KMS, and after 3 hours the guys had it all ironed out.
The engine/weight rules were adopted from Beech Bend's rules, they had it set up where just about anyone could race. They all agreed to the Hoosier 1080 or 1070 tire because of its cost and durability. The schedule was set around Beech Bend's track because of its multi-use facility. The first season schedule was released in January 2009 with 2 races for Beech Bend, Highland Rim, Corbin and 1 race at KMS.
If a series sponsor is found the same tech guys will be at all the races and hopefully a race director. Craig is currently seeking sponsors to help out on the purses and hopefully a points fund for the series.
There will be a Ken-Ten Pro Late Model Series Champion crowned at the end of the season, and while we cannot promise a big purse for the champion or the top 20 in points, we are working hard to acquire money and racing-related gift certificates for the banquet.
The timing is right for a local series. We have over 25 ASA legal cars within a 3 hour drive from Bowling Green, KY. and fuel prices are down compared to 2008. We will run these races early in the program so a team can be back home that night.
We are trying to put the fun back in late model racing, so come on out and join us this season. We anticipate a few problems throughout the year, but we will address them promptly in order to treat all the competitors fairly. I think we will have some B-features along the way this year as well.
2009 Late Model Rules
Bodies
1.1 Body must be stock appearing, aluminum, fiberglass or metal.
1.2 6 ½-inch spoiler maximum.
Safety
2.1 Fuel cell required and must be in center of car. 22 gallon maximum. It must not be lower than rear housing.
2.2 Left side window net required.
2.3 Seat belt and shoulder harness required. All belts must be quick release types (minimum 3" wide). Harness must be type that comes individually over both shoulders. Racing seat only. Seat must be bolted or welded to roll cage.
2.4 Two (2) drive shaft supports are required. No carbon fiber drive shafts permitted. Drive shaft must be painted white.
2.5 Fire suits are required.
2.6 Roll bars minimum 1¾ inch tubing with .095 thickness wall.
2.7 Must have minimum 2-pound fire extinguisher with a gauge and a quick release mounted securely in car within reach of driver while belted in car.
2.8 All weight (lead) must be mounted above frame/inside frame rail with a minimum of two (2) ½ inch bolts. All weights are to be painted white with the car # painted on each piece. Any driver that loses any lead from his/her car will be fined $250 payable prior to any further competition. This rule is in effect during race day or practice days.
2.9. Lines to fuel pressure gauge must be steel braided type.
2.10 TRACK OFFICIALS must approve all safety equipment
SUSPENSION
3.1 Minimum wheelbase of 101" (inches).
3.2 Engine may be moved rearward so the #1 plug is no more than 4 inches behind the left ball joint. No further back.
3.3 Maximum tread width 66 ½", center wheel to center wheel.
3.4 Ground clearance to frame, MUST BE a minimum of 3 inches with driver.
3.5 Engine crankshaft must be no less than 10 inches from ground with driver
Machined Engines
4.1 Engines may be interchanged within different car bodies.
4.2 Flat top pistons with (0) zero deck clearance. Maximum cubic inch 363.
4.5 Any type of Flat Tappet cam.
4.6 Roller camshaft allowed (see weight rules)
4.7 Lifter must be stock size.
4.8 Any type magnetic steel rod -NO ALUMINUM ROD. 6.25 Max. Length.
4.9 Dry Sump permitted.
4.10 Heads must be strictly stock with no less than 62 C.C.'s. (See weight rules)
4.11 No 461 or 461X head allowed. No SB2 Chevy or equivalent Ford or Dodge allowed.
4.12 Dart Heads" permitted. (See weight rules)
4.13 Valve seats can be cut for 2.02 valve.
4.14 No porting or polishing of heads anywhere. No deburring. (See weight rules)
4.15 FORD: Ford-N-Head - Part # M-6049-N351 or Part #M9429C358. Valves: intake 2.20 Exhaust 1.60. 62cc Runner cc 190 -195.
4.16 Chevy: 492: Part # 3987376 Valves: Intake 2.02 Exhaust 1.60 62CC; Vortek: Part #12529093 Valves: Intake 2.02 Exhaust 1.60 62CC; Bow Tie: Part #10134392 Valves: Intake 2.02 Exhaust 1.60 62CC. Runner cc 190-195
4.17 Intake can be Holley #300-38, Edelbrock #5001, or #2912, or Victor Jr. with no more than 2275 c.c. Ford permitted to use Victor Torquer part #2980, #2981, #2940, or #2941 Weind X-celerator # 7515. Chrysler may use Victor XX-2 or Weind X-celerator # 7545. May use two-barrel Edelbrock intake #2901 or #2913.
4.18 No vacuum leaks between intake valve and top of carburetor.
4.19 Any adapter (metal or fiber) must be centered on intake.
4.20 Adapter plate and gaskets cannot exceed 1 ½ inch in thickness.
4.21 No aluminum Blocks Allowed
Machined Engine Carburetors
5.1 Track carburetor: Holley 4412 must have stock base plate with bore size11/16 or 1.697.
CRATE ENGINES
6.1 The following crate engines are approved for the 2009 season: GM Part #88958602; GM Part #88958603; GM Part #88958604; Ford Part #M6007-D347; or Dodge Part #P5007958. .
6.2 Engines must remain stock as they come from manufacturer - NO CHANGES (i.e. rocker arms, Intake, etc). (See weight rules)
6.3 All Chevy Crate Engines may run MSD distributor and Crane ignition unit, same as ASA.
6.4 May run 1" spacer under carburetor.
6.5 2 one-piece open hole gasket maximum - 0.065" thickness that matches the interior dimension of the carburetor throttle base plate. Maximum thickness INCLUDING spacer is 1-1/8" thickness with no air leaks.
Crate Motor Carburetor
7.1 Must run Holley carburetor model #4150, Part #805411 650 CFM 4-barrell. This carburetor must remain box stock. You may change jets, air bleed jets, and power valves. No other modifications of any kind will be considered legal.
TIRES AND WHEELS
8.1 WHEELS - 10 inches wide. Steel Wheels Only. No half sizes.
8.2 TIRES - Track tires only. Hoosiers 1070's.
8.3 No soaking or softening of tires. Any tires found to be tampered with will be confiscated and the driver will be fined $500 and will be suspended for one Race and not allowed to race at that event.
Weight
9.1 GM crate motors 602 and 603 2650 lbs.
9.2 GM crate 604(STOCK) 2800 lbs. Small balancer will be allowed at this weight
9.3 GM 604 crate with small balancer and 1.6 rocker arms 2850 lbs
9.4 Ford McGunegill 2850 lbs
9.5 Machined engines 2800 lbs.
9.6 Roller cam any cc steel head (NO port or polish) 2850 lbs.
9.7 Roller cam any cc steel head with port and polish 2900 lbs.
9.8 Aluminum head any degree 3000 lbs
9.9 All weights with driver after the feature
9.10 58.4% left side weight.
9.11 Must allow weight for fuel burn offs for 50 lappers and special allowances at each track will be made for 100 lappers
Protest and Claims
10.1 No traction control devices of any kind allowed. Anyone caught with one will receive a $500 fine!
10.2 Claim rule on shocks - $250.00 each. Must be made to Track Tech Official right after feature event.
10.3 Crate engine protest will be cost of engine plus $300
10.4 CARBURETOR EXCHANGE RULE FOR CRATE MOTORS: Carburetor may be claimed for $125; $100 to the claimed car, $25 to the track. The claimer must have finished within 3 positions of competitor being claimed and must give the carburetor from the claimers competing car to the competitor being claimed. Each competitor may keep his or her jets, power valves, and gas line (if needed). The track will inspect any and all claimed carburetors prior to the exchange. Carburetor may be purchased outright for $700 if exchange is declined
10.5 All Late Model engines will have a $275 claim on all MSD boxes. 10.6 Only the driver can make a protest.
10.7 You may only protest a car finishing ahead of you.
10.8 All protest decisions will be made by track inspector and are final.
10.9 No payoff will be made in the protested division until protest decision is made.
10.10 If a visual protest is made, it must be one (1) hour before feature starts.
10.11 The inspector will make a judgment and the final decision.
10.12 Protest of engine is $300.00. This covers bore & stroke, pistons, lifters & camshaft, heads and manifolds. $50.00 will go to the track inspector, $25.00 will go to the track and the remainder of the protest money goes to the winner of the protest.
10.13 Protest of lower end is $300.00. This covers rods and crankshaft. $50.00 will go to the track inspector, $25.00 will go to the track and the remainder of the protest money goes to the winner of the protest.
10.14 Protest must be made at scales immediately after the feature. Once protest is filed, it will not and cannot be withdrawn.
10.15 When protested and found illegal, you will lose all points and monies for that night. If you admit to being wrong and don't tear down, you lose all points and monies for that night and will be issued a fine in the amount of $50.00. Each additional time you are protested and found wrong, the fine will increase by $50.00 and you lose all points and monies for that night.
10.16 When protesting, you must also tear down. All protests must be made at scales immediately following that division of racing.
