SALEM SPEEDWAY INAGURATES NEW SHORT TRACK WITH IOFS EVENT

Photo Courtesy of PBO Media Productions

Salem, IN - June 27, 2010 - A strong afternoon thunderstorm and 90 degree weather couldn't keep the International Outlaw Figure 8 Series (IOFS) from inaugurating the new short track at Salem Speedway Sunday afternoon.
The legendary high-banked .555 mile oval in southern Indiana featured Figure 8 racing for the first time in the tracks sixty-three year existence. A new .250 mile oval track with a Figure 8 coarse was constructed over the off-season and saw its first-ever event Sunday with the calling of the IOFS Outlaw Figure 8's.
A nice crowd braved humid 90 plus degree temperatures and a rain delay early in the day to witness history
as Rich Fenwick captured his first IOFS event win. Fenwick becomes the first winner on Salem Speedway's Figure 8 track with his triumph in the 50 lap IOFS main event.
Dane Laster was the first car to hit the track during qualifying and for a brief moment held the new track record. Gary Bedell ultimately ended up with the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier award with a lap of 19.798 seconds around the new track. Heat races were won by Butch Winters, Jeff Swinford, and Tony Anderson.
Attrition played a huge role in the outcome of the fifty-lap feature as Rich Fenwick survived a late race charge from RJ Norton Jr. as the duo worked through traffic the final twenty laps in a caution filled event. Norton Jr. and 2009 champion Doug Greig rounded out the top three. Daniel Glover was the 'Brad Dawg' award winner and Chuckie Hargraves was the AMSOIL Hard Charger award winner presented by authorized dealer Elmer Schaeffer.

Ken-Ten Pro Late Model Race at Salem Speedway was a Hot One!

The old song that Jerry Reed sang was "When your hot your hot".   However, I don't think that was what was on Shepardsville, KY. driver, Kevin Willis' mind.  I'm sure Kevin wanted to be a hot shoe, but this, I don't think was in his plans.  I am happy to report Kevin did walk away.

Driver Sammy Sanders crashes going into turn one during practice.  Sammy and his team were down at Salem Speedway on Friday to test his car.  I talked to Sammy and he said "Man I don't know what happen.  We were fast yesterday and the car felt really good.  Even today the car was good.  I had no warning going into turn one.  She just veered hard into the wall.  I think something broke on the car.  I didn't overdrive the car, it was something on the car."  Sammy has won a lot of races at many tracks.  He was last years defending Ken-Ten Pro Late Model Series Champion.  He was one of the favors to win at Salem Speedway.  Check out more photos of this wreck and more at www.photosbyodell.photoreflect.com

By Rob Spires/ Ken Ten PR

Salem, Ind. (June 19)- The Ken Ten Pro Late Model series has a new prince. Fifteen-year-old Mason Mingus of Brentwood, Tenn., assumed that title after he dominated the Touchstone Energy Hoosier Hills 100 at Indiana’s historic Salem Speedway.

Mingus, who started on the outside of the front row in his first race at the tricky half-mile, rocketed into the lead as the cars made their way into turn 1 on the first lap. From there, Mingus was able to stretch the lead margin little by little each lap.

“We had a clutch problem in practice, so we didn’t get as many laps as we wanted,” Mingus said. “We were able to put down a pretty good lap in qualifying, and then we got a good jump when they waived the green flag,” he added.

The most dramatic incident of the night occurred on lap 17. As the cars worked off of turn 2, the sixth and seventh place cars of Kevin Willis, from Shepherdsville, Ken., and Ryan Isaacs, from Lagrange, Ken., tangled. Both cars slid into the inside wall and ricocheted back into the racing groove where series regulars Brian Royalty and Tim Hollis were collected. As the cars ground to a stop, Willis’ car burst into flames. Though Willis emerged from his crumpled machine unhurt, the race had to be red-flagged for over half an hour while fire crews battled the inferno. Because of the damage sustained to his charred racer, Willis was awarded the AR Bodies hard luck award.

Once the race resumed, it was business as usual for Mingus, though by lap 39 AR Bodies fast qualifier Will Kimmel, from Sellersburg, Ind., had worked his way into second place from his sixth starting spot following the inversion. Kimmel, a Salem Speedway veteran and former track champion, stalked Mingus lap after lap until his car began to overheat. Kimmel brought the steaming car onto pit road on lap 57 and retired from the event.

“Kimmel was who we thought was going to be our toughest competition. We were still faster than him once he got to second, but it made our night easier when he fell out,” Mingus said.

Kimmel’s misfortune opened the door for Hermitage, Tenn., veteran Josh Weston to challenge Mingus for the top spot. Weston, a former Rookie of the Year winner at Nashville’s Fairgrounds Speedway, was able to maintain a consistent margin behind Mingus, though he wasn’t able to gain any ground on the youngster.

The field was bunched up as the caution flew for a Martin Belcher spin on lap 76, but as soon as the green flag was displayed, Mingus reasserted his dominance. Mingus comfortably led until lap 95 when the lights went off in turn 4 of the race track. Due to the circumstances, the race was deemed official and Mingus was awarded the win. In all, it was one of the most dominating performances in Ken Ten series history as Mingus led every lap en route to scoring his first career series victory, and becoming the youngest winner in series history. Weston had to settle for second, and Greenfield, Ind., driver Damon Ecoff finished third. Weston’s charge through the field was enough to earn him the whiplashgear.com hard charger award.

“I was thankful we didn’t have to do that last restart,” said Mingus. “We had the best car, but you never know what can happen.”

Mingus uses a Port City chassis, with a S.P.E.C. engine. The car sports an AR body and ARS shocks. His sponsor is Kentucky/Tennessee 811, which is a number to call before digging to avoid underground utility damage.

The next stop for the Ken Ten Pro Late Model series is the flat quarter-mile bullring of Beech Bend Speedway in Bowling Green, Ken. The action is sure to be intense as several drivers have established themselves as contenders for the series championship!

Ken Ten makes inaugural Salem stop......

Rob Spires-Ken-Ten PR Director
On June 19, the Ken Ten Pro Late Model Series will hit the historic high banks of Salem Speedway in Salem, Ind., for the inaugural running of the Touchstone Energy Hoosier Hills 100.

“We’re really excited to be bringing the Ken Ten series to Salem,” said Craig Thompson, competition director for Ken Ten. “Richard (Deaton, Salem Speedway General Manager) called me about a race last season, but we already had our schedule made. We were sure to work out a date that was good for both of us this season,” said Thompson.

“Salem is such an historic track; it really adds prestige for Ken Ten to be able to visit (the track), and I’m sure it will be an exciting race for the fans,” said Thompson. “They stopped running late models at Salem several years ago, so this is going to be a great opportunity for fans to see late models run there again. We expect a lot of guys that used to be regulars at Salem to show up,” he added.

Familiar faces, new faces

Defending Ken Ten series champion Sammy Sanders, from Bowling Green, is scheduled to compete at Salem, as well as 2010 Corbin Speedway winner, and current point leader, Roger Parker, from London, Ky.

In addition, Will Kimmel of Sellersburg, Ind., Tony Conway of Louisville and Martin Belcher of Brooks, Ky., are all scheduled to compete. Kimmel, son of ARCA veteran crew chief Bill Kimmel, was the 2007 late model track champion at Salem Speedway.

Also scheduled to compete at Salem are Tennessee drivers Josh Weston from Mt. Juliet and Mason Mingus, from Brentwood.

Coble takes Beech Bend

Regular Ken Ten competitor Davey Coble of Madison, Tenn., took the victory in Friday night’s Best Western late model feature race at Beech Bend Speedway in Bowling Green. Coble was the AR Bodies fast qualifier when Ken Ten visited Corbin Speedway two weeks ago.

New Contingency Sponsor

The Ken Ten Pro Late Model Series is proud to welcome Dale Baum and Baum’s S&S Racing Supply to the series’ 2010 contingency program. Baum’s S&S will be offering $100 to any competitor that wins using tires purchased from Baum’s S&S.

Parker takes the win in Ken Ten opener
By Rob Spires/ Ken Ten PR

CORBIN, Ken. (June 5)- A hot day at the track turned into a hot night of action as the Ken Ten Pro Late Model series opened its 2010 season with the Some Gave All 100 presented by American Mortgage Lenders at Corbin Speedway. Roger Parker, from nearby London, Ken., took the victory from the pole, leading all 100 laps of the race. That stat is misleading; however, as Parker never had more than a three-car-length lead, and had to hold off multiple challengers en route to victory.

“This was an unbelievable race,” Parker said. “The Ken Ten series brings a good group of cars every time, so it’s a career highlight to be able to beat those guys.”

Davey Coble, from Madison, Tenn., had the AR Bodies quick qualifying time of the night, but pulled a 2 in the re-draw for starting positions, putting him on the outside of the front row. As the green flag dropped, Coble was able to move around Parker to take the lead down the backstretch. That lead disappeared, however, when Coble got loose in turn 4 of the tight quarter-mile track. Parker slipped into the lead as several cars worked their way under Coble.

On lap 17, Blake Hillard went for a spin in turn 3. As the cars slowed for the caution, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place cars of Chad Willis, Robbie Brown, and Coble all made contact on the backstretch. The incident ended Willis’ night, though it did give him the AR Bodies hard luck award. Brown and Coble only received cosmetic damage, and continued in the race.

As the cars lined up for the restart, Brian Royalty inherited 2nd position, pulling alongside Parker. On the restart Royalty challenged Parker, moving up to his door, before eventually having to relinquish the position and fall into second.

Royalty put up ferocious challenges on each of the next two restarts, but each time Parker was able to use the inside line to his advantage and slide in front of Royalty to maintain the lead.

As the cars worked through turn 2 on a lap-66 restart, the 3rd place car of Brown made contact with Royalty, sending him spinning into the infield. Brown was put at the rear of the field for his part in the incident. Jason Jones inherited the 2nd position as the next in a line of drivers to challenge Parker.

On the restart, Jones was able to hold Pace with Parker for the first lap, but got loose in turn 2 the next time around and caught Parker in the right-rear quarter panel. Both drivers got out of shape, but were able to keep their cars pointed in the right direction, though Jones did fall out of contention as he fought to keep his car under control.

While the leaders were beating on each other, Brown was quickly working his way back to the front. With the help of cautions for a couple of minor incidents, Brown found himself in 2nd as the race neared conclusion.

On the final restart of the race, on lap 82, Brown was lined up next to Parker and battled on his outside for numerous laps, but as it had all night, the inside line proved to be the quick way around the track, and Parker was able to withstand yet another challenge.

Parker managed to briefly stretch his lead, but by lap 98 Brown had caught up to his rear bumper. However, Parker proved to be too strong and Brown had to settle for 2nd, one-car-length behind Parker. Jones, Coble, and Tim Hollis rounded out the top five. Seventh place finisher Gregg Carby gained six positions during the race and won the whiplashgear.com hard charger award.

“These double-file restarts were intense,” said an ecstatic Parker following the race. “It was all I could do to hold them off. Every time something would happen to one of them, another one would come along that was just as tough. After (Jones) got into me, something wasn’t quite right, but we were still good enough to hold them off.”

Parker was quick to point out that his efforts as the driver were only a part of the puzzle and that his crew was the reason that he was able to win the race.

“My crew is awesome, they deserve all the credit,” he said. “I especially want to thank Steve Brock, my brother Benny Parker, and Ritchie Alexander,” Parker said.

The next stop for the Ken Ten series is the high banks of the Salem Speedway in Indiana, where the action is sure to be just as intense as what Corbin Speedway fans were treated to in the opening round!

NHRR NEWS FLASH - FLOODS AT BEECH BEND? WHAT FLOODS?

NHRA Motorsports Museum Preparing Even Hotter Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion

Just a month ago, Bowling Green , Ky. was dealing with severe rain and flooded areas. Beech Bend Raceway Park was under water and rumors began to fly. Reunion fans can rest assured that the drag strip action is better than ever at Beech Bend. Last weekend, the NHRA SportsNATIONAL took place at Beech Bend without a hitch. NHRA North Central Division Director Jay Hullinger tells us that, “Other than a couple of fence sections that have yet to be cleaned up or repaired, one wouldn't know that the track was under 15 plus feet of water.”

Thanks for the update, Jay!

We’ll see you at Beech Bend and don’t forget your sunscreen!
